History of Coburg

Coburg has a rich history dating back to the mid to late 1800s. Driving through the streets you will appreciate the mixture of architecture that makes up the pretty streetscape with treelined streets which add to it’s charm.

Coburg Then

Prior to European occupation, the area around Coburg and Merri Creek was occupied by the Woiwurrung speaking Wurundjeri people.

By the mid 1800’s Coburg population grew rapidly with the Victorian gold rush and a township emerged with numerous hotels and commercial premises built on Sydney Road. Coburg Market in Sydney Road Coburg is, in fact, one of Melbourne’s oldest traditional markets!

Coburg Railway station was built in 1888. Horse tram service began along Sydney Road in 1889 with electric trams starting service in 1916. Coburg became a shire in 1875.
