This 91 year old shot looks in an easterly direction down Bell Street. The photo looks through the railway crossing on the Upfield Line into the retail area. Sydney Road is 200 metres ahead.
You will note the road is graded but not sealed. Motor vehicles are still some years from completely replacing the horse as is evidenced by the droppings the motorcycle riders hopefully missed.
The Upfield line was opened to this point in 1884. 5 years later it was extended to Somerton which is when the rail crossing came into being. It looked like this, with hand operated gates until 1962. In that year boom gates were installed, activated automatically for up (city bound) trains, but still manually operated from the signal box for down trains headed towards Upfield.
